SEO: What is a favicon and why do I need one?

Tiny icons in tabs and search results. They will not rank you on their own. They will help people recognise you.

A favicon is the small graphic in the browser tab, next to your name in search results, and in history. It is how people tell one tab from another without reading every title.

Will a favicon improve SEO?

Yes, but not by moving a ranking number on its own. It helps in the ways that actually get a click:

  • A clear mark stands out next to competing links.
  • People find your tab again without scanning text.
  • The site looks finished. That is a trust signal.
  • Bookmarks are easier to spot later.

It is a small piece of identity. Implementing one is simple. Leaving it off says you did not care about the last 16 pixels of the experience.
